Here’s the kayak in three pieces. I cut straight scarfs with a jigsaw – it was the easiest joint to cut from the assembled kayak – but the makkusiineq, or hooked scarf, would be a more elegant choice had I started from two pieces.
Alison has taken the kayak frame to her studio at the Torpedo Factory and painted it light green. The leather straps at bow and stern she’ll color black.
Yesterday (3 May), we took everything down to the Artomatic site and started work. Al painted the wall from which the kayak will hang, and I started to fabricate the platform. The platform will be lit from underneath and covered with two sheets of drywall painted black. Today, we’ll cut holes for the lights, install the drywall, and hang the kayak.
