It's been well over a year since I've been comfortable in my kayak for any length of time -- say over an hour. I get pain in my left leg and my back doesn't feel right. It hasn't always been that way. One day of walking two winters ago did me in the next day. A few visits to the chiropractor several months later helped, as did time, but comfort in the kayak hasn't returned.
The usual remedy is exercise to strengthen core muscles, but that's a slow process. Wes Ostertag installed a triangular-shaped piece of foam in his kayak to support the sacrum (I believe); others have used more extensive foam back rests. We had an extra Immersion Research backband lying around, and I thought it might work. I installed it once before, but the combination of short screws and 3/4-inch gunwales made for straps that wouldn't stay attached. Last weekend, I added a 3/4-inch piece of pine to each gunwale, screwed and glued with Titebond III, then attached the backband with wood screws.
